The Jungle as Border Zone: The Aesthetics of Nature in the Work of Apichatpong Weerasethakul

Abstract: In Thai cinema, nature is often depicted as an opposition to the urban sphere, forming a contrast in ethical terms. This dualism is a recurring and central theme in Thai representations and an important carrier of Thainess (khwam pen Thai). The lmmaker Apichatpong Weerasethakul o ers a new take on this theme. Signi cant parts of his work are set in the jungle, a realm radically di erent from the agricultural sphere that the mainstay of Thai representations tends to focus on. In Apichatpong’s work, the wilderness becomes a liminal space, on multiple levels. This paper focuses on how this liminality translates into Apichatpong’s aesthetics of the jungle and on how this aesthetics and the lms’ narrations negotiate Thai nationhood via the perception of the spectators. ----- Im thail ndischen Film wird Natur oft im Kontrast zu Urbanit t gezeichnet. Dieser Gegensatz wird dabei auch auf eine moralische Ebene übertragen. Er ist ein wiederkehrendes, zentrales Motiv in thail ndischen Repr sentationen und ein wichtiger Tr ger der sogenannten Thainess“ (khwam pen Thai), der nationalen Identit t. Der Filmemacher Apichatpong Weerasethakul n hert sich diesem Motiv anders an. Zentrale Passagen seines Werks spielen im Dschungel, der einen g nzlich anderen Bereich darstellt als die domestizierte Natur der üblichen Landschaftsdarstellungen. Im Werk Apichatpongs wird der Dschungel auf mehreren Ebenen zu einem Grenzbereich. Dieser Artikel untersucht, wie sich dieser Grenzstatus in Apichatpongs sthetik widerspiegelt und wie diese lmische sthetik und Narration das thail ndische Konzept des Nationalstaates kommentieren.

Abstract: Trata-se de uma reflex o sobre literatura e teologia, pontualmente sobre poesia e teologia. Como afirmou Edgar Morin “a literatura tem a vantagem de refletir sobre a complexidade do ser humano e sobre a quantidade incrível de seus sonhos” (MORIN, 2009:6). Já a teologia, como definida por Rubem Alves, é “um jeito de falar sobre tais coisas dando-lhes um nome e apenas distinguindo-se da poesia porque a teologia é sempre feita como prece...” (ALVES, 2005:21). O encontro das duas é a ocasi o para que seja feita uma reflex o acerca de Deus, a partir do espa o da poesia, recorrendo a outra linguagem, outro conhecimento, outras bibliotecas, considerando o corpo, o desejo, a vida, o mundo na medida em que apresenta a pessoa, a sociedade e a cultura.
Hybrid RANS-LES of Shaped Hole Film Cooling on an Adiabatic Flat Plate at Low Reynolds Number  [PDF]

Abstract: Hybrid RANS-LES methods offer a means of reducing computational cost and setup time to simulate transitional flows. Several methods are evaluated in ANSYS CFX, including Scale-Adaptive Simulation (SAS), Shielded Detached Eddy Simulation (SDES), Stress-Blended Eddy Simulation (SBES), and Zonal Large Eddy Simulation (ZLES), along with a no-model laminar simulation. Each is used to simulate an adiabatic flat plate film cooling experiment of a shaped hole at low Reynolds number. Adiabatic effectiveness is calculated for Blowing Ratio (BR) = 1.5 and Density Ratio (DR) = 1.5. The ZLES method and laminar simulation most accurately match experimental lateral-average adiabatic effectiveness along the streamwise direction from the trailing edge of the hole to 35 hole diameters downstream of the hole (X/D = 0 to X/D = 35), with RMS deviations of 5.1% and 4.2%, and maximum deviations of 8% and 11%, respectively. The accuracy of these models is attributed to the resolution of turbulent structures in not only the mixing region but in the upstream boundary layer as well, where the other methods utilize RANS and do not switch to LES.
Ritual, Memory and Oaths: A Mixed Method Approach to Building Capacity for Ethical Praxis  [PDF]

Abstract: Building capacity for ethical praxis within the South Australian Public Service is vital to those who serve in the public interest as with the community it serves. The Mixed Method research results reported within this article seek to expose previously unknown knowledge about ritual, oaths, and building capacity for ethical praxis for those employed in administrative tiers of employment, ranging from ASO1 to ASO8, MAS1 to MAS3, PO1 to PO6, and SAES1 to SAES2 within the South Australian public sector. Finding existing ways of improving public sector ethics in South Australia through ritual, memory, and oaths was non-existent, given ethics sensitivity and employee scepticism. No researcher had previously investigated oaths and their impact on individual attitude within the Australian or South Australian Public Service. An outcome of this original research study was the composition of the Lewis Oath theory. The specifically designed hypothetical oath tested was one way of contributing to understanding and subsequently improving public sector ethics. Furthermore, other acknowledged methods for preventing unethical behaviour include, yet are not limited to, the improvement in organisational culture and ethos. Social science researchers and government must recognise the underlying sentiment and attitude of individuals and the collective society if ethical praxis is to be achieved within this context.

Abstract: Creativity or creative thinking are often viewed as intangibles that we can observe in their impact and consequences, but that in itself is hard to define and assess. Some would even argue that assessments, which generally look for the capacity of students to find and refine pre-defined answers, stand in direct opposition to efforts to strengthen creativity. However, what we cannot see is hard to improve and what we cannot measure will not get attention. For this reason, the OECD Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) is making efforts to build a novel assessment that can capture elements of creative thinking. The approach is based on evidence-centred design which involves documented, explicit linkages among the test purposes, the assumptions made about the test takers and that the test seeks to measure among them, and the evidence supporting the claims. This paper summarises the rationale and design of this assessment.
Probing Dust Settling in Proto-planetary Disks with ALMA

Abstract: Investigating the dynamical evolution of dust grains in proto-planetary disks is a key issue to understand how planets should form. We identify under which conditions dust settling can be constrained by high angular resolution ALMA observations at mm wavelengths, and which observational strategies are suited for such studies. We find out that an angular resolution better than or equal to 0.1” (using 2.3 km baselines at 0.8mm) allows us to constrain the dust scale height and flaring index with sufficient precision to unambiguously distinguish between settled and non-settled disks, provided the inclination is close enough to edge-on (i > 75°). Ignoring dust settling and assuming hydrostatic equilibrium when analyzing such disks biase the derived dust temperature, the radial dependency of the dust emissivity index and the surface density distribution.
Deletion of Thioredoxin Reductase and Effects of Selenite and Selenate Toxicity in Caenorhabditis elegans

Abstract: Thioredoxin reductase-1 (TRXR-1) is the sole selenoprotein in C. elegans, and selenite is a substrate for thioredoxin reductase, so TRXR-1 may play a role in metabolism of selenium (Se) to toxic forms. To study the role of TRXR in Se toxicity, we cultured C. elegans with deletions of trxr-1, trxr-2, and both in axenic media with increasing concentrations of inorganic Se. Wild-type C. elegans cultured for 12 days in Se-deficient axenic media grow and reproduce equivalent to Se-supplemented media. Supplementation with 0–2 mM Se as selenite results in inverse, sigmoidal response curves with an LC50 of 0.20 mM Se, due to impaired growth rather than reproduction. Deletion of trxr-1, trxr-2 or both does not modulate growth or Se toxicity in C. elegans grown axenically, and 75Se labeling showed that TRXR-1 arises from the trxr-1 gene and not from bacterial genes. Se response curves for selenide (LC50 0.23 mM Se) were identical to selenite, but selenate was 1/4th as toxic (LC50 0.95 mM Se) as selenite and not modulated by TRXR deletion. These nutritional and genetic studies in axenic media show that Se and TRXR are not essential for C. elegans, and that TRXR alone is not essential for metabolism of inorganic Se to toxic species.
Toxic-Selenium and Low-Selenium Transcriptomes in Caenorhabditis elegans: Toxic Selenium Up-Regulates Oxidoreductase and Down-Regulates Cuticle-Associated Genes

Abstract: Selenium (Se) is an element that in trace quantities is both essential in mammals but also toxic to bacteria, yeast, plants and animals, including C. elegans. Our previous studies showed that selenite was four times as toxic as selenate to C. elegans, but that deletion of thioredoxin reductase did not modulate Se toxicity. To characterize Se regulation of the full transcriptome, we conducted a microarray study in C. elegans cultured in axenic media supplemented with 0, 0.05, 0.1, 0.2, and 0.4 mM Se as selenite. C. elegans cultured in 0.2 and 0.4 mM Se displayed a significant delay in growth as compared to 0, 0.05, or 0.1 mM Se, indicating Se-induced toxicity, so worms were staged to mid-L4 larval stage for these studies. Relative to 0.1 mM Se treatment, culturing C. elegans at these Se concentrations resulted in 1.9, 9.7, 5.5, and 2.3%, respectively, of the transcriptome being altered by at least 2-fold. This toxicity altered the expression of 295 overlapping transcripts, which when filtered against gene sets for sulfur and cadmium toxicity, identified a dataset of 182 toxic-Se specific genes that were significantly enriched in functions related to oxidoreductase activity, and significantly depleted in genes related to structural components of collagen and the cuticle. Worms cultured in low Se (0 mM Se) exhibited no signs of deficiency, but low Se was accompanied by a transcriptional response of 59 genes changed ≥2-fold when compared to all other Se concentrations, perhaps due to decreases in Se-dependent TRXR-1 activity. Overall, these results suggest that Se toxicity in C. elegans causes an increase in ROS and stress responses, marked by increased expression of oxidoreductases and reduced expression of cuticle-associated genes, which together underlie the impaired growth observed in these studies.
Vertical Structure of Magnetized Accretion Disks around Young Stars

Abstract: We model the vertical structure of magnetized accretion disks subject to viscous and resistive heating, and irradiation by the central star. We apply our formalism to the radial structure of magnetized accretion disks threaded by a poloidal magnetic field dragged during the process of star formation developed by Shu and coworkers. We consider disks around low mass protostars, T Tauri, and FU Orionis stars. We consider two levels of disk magnetization, $\lambda_{sys} = 4$ (strongly magnetized disks), and $\lambda_{sys} = 12$ (weakly magnetized disks). The rotation rates of strongly magnetized disks have large deviations from Keplerian rotation. In these models, resistive heating dominates the thermal structure for the FU Ori disk. The T Tauri disk is very thin and cold because it is strongly compressed by magnetic pressure; it may be too thin compared with observations. Instead, in the weakly magnetized disks, rotation velocities are close to Keplerian, and resistive heating is always less than 7\% of the viscous heating. In these models, the T Tauri disk has a larger aspect ratio, consistent with that inferred from observations. All the disks have spatially extended hot atmospheres where the irradiation flux is absorbed, although most of the mass ($\sim 90-95$ \%) is in the disk midplane. With the advent of ALMA one expects direct measurements of magnetic fields and their morphology at disk scales. It will then be possible to determine the mass-to-flux ratio of magnetized accretion disks around young stars, an essential parameter for their structure and evolution. Our models contribute to the understanding of the vertical structure and emission of these disks.
